SURGICAL TREATMENT
CURETTAGE
Dental curettage is a procedure to clean the gums and root of the teeth. It removes the bacterial plaque, and calculus , along the tooth roots. This procedure is done for patients with periodontal disease. It is done under local anaesthesia and helps promote healing of gums and reduces further infection.
FLAP SURGERY
Periodontal flap surgery or gum surgery is a procedure performed in patients with periodontitis. It is a surgical treatment where the flap is created to access the roots and bone of the teeth for complete cleaning. This procedure requires local anaesthesia. Other adjunctive procedure may be required for complete treatment of periodontitis.
CYST REMOVAL
Dental cyst is a sac of tissue which is filled with semi solid or liquid material near to the tooth inside the jaw bone.
Treatment for a dental cyst depends on the size of the cyst. Small cyst can be removed under local anaesthesia , larger cysts may require treatment under general anaesthesia in hospital.
The three main types is cyst removal are Enucleation, Marsupialization and resection. Depending on the type of cyst , either of the procedure is done.
JAW FRACTURE REDUCTION
Jaw fractures are the second most common facial fractures. Fractured jaw results in bleeding , difficulty in opening and closing mouth , swelling, difficulty in breathing , and numbness.
Treatment for jaw fracture depends on the severity.
Mild jaw fracture requires palliative care – liquid diet, medications.
Moderate to Severe fracture requires jaw wiring or jaw reduction and metal plates and screws to immobilise jaw bone. This procedure might require hospitalisation to complete treatment under general anaesthesia.
ALVEOLOPLASTY
Alveoloplasty is a surgical procedure that reshapes or molds the alveolar bone of the jaw to create a smooth surface where the tooth has been extracted or lost. It is a pre prosthetic procedure that is done before getting a denture or implants. It is carried out under local anaesthesia.
ORTHOGNATHIC SURGERY
Orthognathic surgery is a corrective and a major surgical procedure done under general anaesthesia.
It is carried out in patients with malocclusion, jaw defects, airway related problems and TMJ disorders.
This procedure requires proper diagnosis and treatment planning.
Three main types of corrective jaw surgery is done:
• Maxilla surgery
• Mandible surgery
• Double jaw surgery
EAR LOBE SURGERY
Lobuloplasty is a minor surgical procedure to repair a split or torn earlobe.
Ear lobe elongation due to usage of heavy earrings or any ear lobe surgery requires this lobuloplasty procedure.
It is a day care procedure where small dissolvable sutures are used to close the ear lobe opening under local anaesthesia.
Suture removal is done after 7-10 days, and ear love re piercing is done after 3 months to maximise the strength of repair and prevent elongation.
